Our grandmothers made do with many ordinary everyday items in order to clean their homes to a pristine condition which was the envy of the neighbours.
Here is an old-fashioned tip for cleaning windows –
First, you will need: water, plenty of newspapers (preferably ones without colour pictures), white vinegar, a bucket, and a squeegee (optional). You will require a lot of white vinegar (at least 4 or 5 litres), depending on how many windows you want to clean.
Mix a solution of half vinegar to half water in a bucket. Crumple up sheets of newspaper and immerse in the solution. Squeeze out any excess water, once it is saturated. Use the wet, crumpled newspaper to clean your windows – scrubbing hard at any caked on bits of dirt and using circular movements to make sure you do not miss any areas of glass. Replace the newspaper with another sheet, once it starts to disintegrate. Wipe the window dry with either crumpled up dry sheets of newspaper or you can use a squeegee if you prefer, making sure you wipe the end of the squeegee after every stroke.
When you have finished, stand back and admire your windows, with the knowledge that you have not harmed the environment in your cleaning!
