We are all becoming acutely aware of the rising cost of energy supplies currently and many householders are looking for ways to save money by reducing their energy costs. We cannot unfortunately halt the increase in costs but what we can do is try to make our homes more energy efficient. One of the easiest ways to do this is to stop heat escaping through ill-fitting and outdated windows and doors.
Obviously, the ideal solution is to replace the windows and doors with new ones that are triple glazed, and A rated but this may not be an option as the cost of replacing all the doors and windows in a property can be huge. The alternatives are to replace the units gradually as you can afford them, if you can get a window company to do this it will help, or to try to make your current windows and doors lose less heat.
Having thick curtains that can be closed as soon as it gets dark can save a surprising amount of heat loss through windows and doors and is a cheap and easy solution. Draught excluder can be attached to the window frame where draughts are felt and around internal doors. Door brushes that attached to the bottom of the door also help to keep heat in and cold out.
